We begin tonight with a new push at the State House to close the gap in educational opportunity.
Officials and leaders from several communities around the state spoke out today for legislation to increase funding for schools with most needy students. That includes Boston, with a high percentage English language learners and students in poverty.

In a ceremony this afternoon, Althea Garrison was sworn-in as Boston's newest city councilor at-large. She takes the seat that was vacated when Ayanna Pressley was elected as the new congresswoman from the state's seventh district.

A new report about barriers faced by women on the Boston Fire Department is taking some criticism. While citing recent progress, the report called for steps to make the department more inclusive.
